Surya Lama Thangka ArtistSurya Lama was born in Khasa,Tibet in 1961.
At age sixteen he became a monk at Lamayuru Monastery in the distant Himalayan Mountain region of Ladakh, India where he studied thangka painting for three years. In his late 20's he moved to Sidhpur near the Dalai Lama's residence in McLeod Ganj and continued his studies for another 5 years at Norbulingka Institute, which was established to preserve Tibetan heritage, culture and arts. After completing his education Surya Lama began selling his thangka to the many pilgrims and tourists who come to the area. Starting with a blanket on the side of Bhagsu Road in McLeod Ganj, he got a stall and after many years he opened his first small shop. Two years later, in February 2010, he opened a second store that is larger and better to work in. It is possible to visit his workshop in the remote hillstation of McLeod Ganj in person. From the bus stand go down Bhagsu Road just past the veg market at Amdho village. His shop is on the left.
